What Happens in a Music Recording Studio?

Music is a universal language shared across all cultures and societies the world over. While recorded music has become the most consumed medium, most people don’t stop to ask, what actually happens in a Recording Studio? How do you actually record music? While there isn’t one definitive answer the process is generally the same no matter what studio you are in. In this article we will go through the steps taken to create a modern audio recording.

What is a Recording Studio?

At it’s core a Recording Studio consists of an acoustically treated room or room(s) designed for capturing clear audio for either vocals or instrumentation, or both, known as a Live Room, and a room for the audio engineer and or producer from which to control and manipulate all of the sounds being recorded, known as a Control Room. Larger recording facilities may feature multiple live rooms and multiple control room but ultimately only one of each is needed for a single audio recording.

What is the maingoal of a Recording Studio?

Essentially the only goal for a Recording Studio is achieving the highest quality audio recording possible. This is achieved through a combination of quality equipment, good microphone placement(s), a skilled musician(s) and a skilled Audio Engineer.

What happens in a Live Room?

The Live Room is where the artist(s) will perform their music. This will consist of a sound proofed room ofted additionally isolated through thicker walls and by other means. Here you will find the microphone(s) needed to actually capture the sound. The artist will have a pair of headphones through which they can hear whatever is needed for the recording including being able to communicate with anyone in the Control Room. There is usually a thick pane of glass seperating the Live Room from the Control Room so the Audio Engineer can see the artist.

What happens in a Control Room?

The Control Room is where the Audio Engineer controls all of the audio signals coming in from the Live Room, sometimes on a large mixing console but this is required. In most cases all of the signals are fed into a computer where the audio can then be processed. A few studios still record to a tape machine in an older style of recording as this can provide it’s own unique sound but that is rare these days.

From here the engineer can adjust the levels of the incoming audio, tweak frequencies, add effects and any of the other multitude of things an audio engineer is able to do. Some studios will also record, mix and mastering from the same Control Room but that depends on the facility as many studios don’t offer those services in the same session.

What is the most important thing in a recording studio?

There is no one single thing that will make a recording, rather a combination of factors. Having state-of-the-art equipment, placed correctly in a properly sound proofed room is critical to ensuring the raw audio is of a high quality. Having an engineer who knows how to work with that audio is also vitally important. The performance of the audio is of course also critical as ultimately there is no replacement for the perfect take. While there are several other factors that contribute, these are the most fundamental to ensuring a recording is of the top quality.

Why are professional Recordings Studios important?

Recording Studios are imporant above all else for being the means by which an artist can bring their music to a world platform. Without a quality recording the only way to hear an artists music is through a live performance. Having musical recordings allows an artist to share their music with anyone, anywhere with access to an internet connection. The Recording Studio is what allows this to happen and makes sure that the music that is shared is of a quality that can be enjoyed by everyone.

Conclusion

Now you know what happens in a modern Recording Studio. Always check that any studio you are considering has all of the basics needed for a quality audio recording. Do your homework so you can choose the best recording studio for you to ensure your recording comes out the way you want.
